چکیده

Excepting the observations of Loughridge (1) we have been unable to iind data on the calcium content of striped muscle during parathyroid tetany. He found much less calcium in dog muscle during tetany (two animals) than in the muscles after recovery from tetany through treatment with calcium chloride or parathyroid extract (three animals). Katz (2) found 0.0685 parts of calcium per kilo of normal dog muscle. Behrendt (3) stated that the calcium content of muscles remains unchanged during parathyroid tetany in dogs, but gave no data. MacCallum and Voegtlin (4) found that the calcium content of brain tissue was reduced and assumed that it was lower in other tissues. Cooke (5) found slightly more calcium in the brains of dogs dying with tetany than in normals. On account of the small amount of existing data we thought it desirable to determine calcium in the muscles of normal and of parathyroidectomized dogs either to confirm previous reports or add new findings.

on the Relation of Tetany to the Parathyroid Glands and to Calcium Metabolism

1. Tetany occurs spontaneously in many forms and may also be produced by the destruction of the parathyroid glands. Recent researches tend to demonstrate an intimate relation between the various forms of tetany and relative or absolute insufficiency of the parathyroid gland. 2. The parathyroid glands are independent organs with definite specific function. Whether or not this function is intimat...

Further Experimental Studies in Tetany

It has been our aim to determine in what particular the blood is altered during tetany so that it can produce hyperexcitability of the motor nerves. As a working hypothesis it has been assumed that (1) there may be a lack of calcium in the blood and tissues; (2) there may be a circulating poison which like an oxalate could render inactive the circulating calcium; and (3) there may be a substanc...

Observations on Tetany in Dogs

Accessory parathyroid tissue unassociated with the thyroid lobes is present in 5 to 6 per cent. of dogs. For the determination of the presence of accessory parathyroid tissue there are two tests: (1) the anatomical, often entailing serial sections of the neck and upper thoracic structures, and (2) the biological, consisting of the daily use of some calcium salt for two to three weeks. The latte...

Calcium Metabolism in a Case of Infantile Tetany

Quite recently MacCallum and others 1 have studied calcium metabolism in dogs suffering from post-operative tetany in consequence of parathyroidectomy. The administration either of soluble calcium salts or of parathyroid tissue relieves the tetany in such dogs. This work led us to study a case of infantile tetany which was available. The clinical aspects of the case have been reported elsewhere...

The Excretion of Calcium and Magnesium after Parathyroidectomy

Within the past few years evidence has gradually accumulated, both direct and indirect, indicating some definite relation, the nature of which is as yet quite obscure, between the kations of calcium salts and certain forms of muscle irritability. The observations recorded may be summarized as follows : ( I ) Abnormal muscular twitchings and contractions may be brought about in an organism by a ...
